We went hiking at Split Rock Mountain Wild Forest over the weekend and saw this fine specimen:

Why didn't you put your boot next it for scale? Or, better yet, a hand?

Seriously though, great find! I've seen one both times I've hiked the Tongue Mt Range, and consider myself lucky! One of them had a red dot on its tail, and several years later I happened to attend a talk at the Loj by someone who was doing a study on rattlers in the area. He would live-trap the snakes and then mark them with paint dots, so I had found one of his snakes. Pretty neat

Cantcatchtrout: Yes, they're poisonous. You really don't have much to worry about unless you're harassing the thing. Just watch where you're walking when in known rattler country, because you sure wouldn't want to step on one!

Really nice pic, wish I could have seen it. So far i've stayed away from any timber rattler areas except for near the southern catskills, im afraid of snakes. :/

Uh, yeah. Try "timber rattlesnake bite" on Google Image Search.

As far as some sort of prop for scale, I actually suggested trying to flip a quarter onto its head. Gotta remember to bring a ruler with me next time I go out.
