  • Coulombe Creek Fire, Wells

On Tuesday, June 28th, lightning started a small duff fire just off the Pine Orchard trail near Pumpkin Hollow Rd. in Wells. The fire was discovered late the next day and assessed by a NYSP Helicopter that evening. Forest Rangers began to fight it on the 30th, staging out of the PHR trailhead.

The Rangers swung into full gear on the 4th of July weekend. While we were enjoying the holiday weekend, these awesome folks spent long days in the hot, bug infested woods putting out a tough fire.

While the fire size wasn't that large, maybe an acre or two, they had seven trucks, multiple ATV's and a helicopter supporting a full crew. Tredhed talked to them as they were wrapping up on Thursday and the Rangers said they turned the duff by hand and wet it down with Indian Pumps filled from a temporary dam they built on the Coulombe Creek.

Tredhed hiked into the site after the Rangers had left and said there really wasn't much there. They cleared the snowmobile trail to support their ATVs and equipment and built a temporary trail down to the fire site and Coulombe Creek.

My hats off to the Rangers who fought this fire. Duff fires are tough! Hopefully Tredhed will chime in with some more info once he returns from the Hamilton County Mosquito Preserve later this weekend.

      Agreed Jim!

Here's some of Tredheds picts from the other day.

Does anyone know what kind of device/sensor is depicted in the second photo? This was deployed at the fire site and looks like some kind of collection device.

There's been a number of fires recently in the Eastern Adirondacks, likely due to the low snow pack this winter and the dry spring. Both the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness and the Lake George Wild Forest had fires last week. And there was another fire a few weeks ago in Stony Creek.

The rains over the weekend have improved conditions somewhat, but late July/early August often tends to be relatively dry so we may again see a return to increased fire danger soon.
