The hunting hawk surprise

Not a raptor loved by birder enthusiasts, but this Cooper's Hawk perched right off my deck, looking for a songbird meal. I've wanted to add this species to my portfolio so this proved to be agreat photo opportunity.

I saw one of these during white tail season. It was flying through thick brush, and I could hear its wings hitting tree trunks. Even though they weigh almost nothing they can take down turkeys.

as much as I enjoy birds I still love these hawks, they are fun to watch.
And hey, they gotta eat too!

I guess he's the reason I don't have my usual flock of Cardinals hanging around this year , only a couple pairs of Reds this year.

My hunting hawk surprise was that he wasn't even interested in the nice fat grey squirrel that offered himself up for sacrifice

Naw , he may have grabbed a cardinal or two over the year , but now that we have some snow I see that the Cardinals were just eating what they are are supposed to . When that gets buried in snow and cold hits , they do congregate around the feeder.
