Hoffman Notch

Sorry to crowd this thread with my posts/queries, but this is the last one I swear.

Wanted to hike through Hoffman Notch, but without using a shuttle.

There will be a diverse group of hikers so if anyone could give me some recommendations on the best way to make a one day hike out of this I would sincerely appreciate it.

Thank you once again boys for all your help.

Hoffman Notch is great.

No easy way without a shuttle.

Don't know how big your group is, or how many vehicles you have.

If you have 2 vehicles and some folks that only want a short hike, one group could just hike to Bailey Pond, enjoy the views and then hike out and drive around to pick you up at the North end. About 40 minutes for the drive.

Split the group and each sub-group starts from opposite ends. Swap keys in the middle.
Or, as suggested do it back and forth turning around at one point.

Yes, I like Neil's idea of groups going from opposite ends.

(But I have never approved of "key swaps." Plans can change, for innumerable reasons. If groups are going from opposite ends of anything, I make sure BOTH groups have BOTH set of keys before starting out.)

Totally agree with this. Murphy's Law never sleeps.

Hoffman is nice, and more or less guaranteed solitude. It's also not an overly physically demanding hike (although all the way through in a single day is somewhat on the longer side).

I would generally agree that splitting into two groups with vehicles on either end (plus a key for each vehicle with each group) is probably your best bet. Alternatively, you could pick an end and hike as far as Big Marsh before turning around.

FYI: Because this area doesn't get much use, it's lower on the priority list for trail maintenance. The trail does get brushy in spots- the witch hobble especially can obscure the tread and entangle feet. It's not as bad as some DEC trails but expect that it's not going to be an obvious, well-traveled route the whole way through.

If your group is up for it after hiking through Hoffman Notch, across the Blue Ridge Road on the northern end is the The Branch... from the same trailhead parking lot as Hoffman Notch you can follow an old road (now on state land since the Boreas purchase) north up along The Branch for some nice spots to hang out by the stream and enjoy the scenery (cascades and riffles). You don't have to walk very far to find some nice spots to relax.
