Brook Trout Lake
I was wondering if anyone might have some input on how to get to the trail head for Brook Trout Lake if you were coming in from Wakely Damn Recreational Area/Cedar River Road near the golf course as opposed to the other entrance near Limekiln lake. I have been told that the ride is about 18 miles down the dirt road but I am not sure if there are any particular turnoffs along the away or how well marked it is. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The road is well maintained and well marked. You go to the end of Cedar River road and you'll see this sign. Hang a left towards Squaw Lake. The trailhead to Brooktrout lake is maybe a few miles down the road.
![]() As I'm sure you know trout season is over for most of NYS which includes Brooktrout Lake. I used this YouTube video the first time I went back there to scope it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3z9nTWBBsPg Enjoy!

At one time you were required to have 4 wheel drive or chains after October 15 in the Plains, and you should be aware that you will likely need them if it snows and sticks. Also, you should never just blow by the gate like the guy in the video did, you are required to register, only wise so folks know you are back there, but also so use of the area can be gaged, necessary for funding.

I started at Wakely and went down that way in a "city car" on Labor Day weekend to scout it for a future loop hike. The road was fine to the Otter Brook trailhead. After that was another story; I drove about 50 yards and turned around. I think you need 4WD/AWD with good ground clearance to go further. It's not a problem for me, as next year I plan to park and start at Otter Brook, loop past BT and walk the road back to my car. I am sure there are others on the forum who have more experience with the road past Otter Brook.

Since most of the MRP road maintenance is handled by Inlet and Indian Lake anymore, the condition varies with the weather and the demand for services in their regular bailiwick. Lately, they only get it opened to the Moose by Memorial Day, then will get it open to Otter. There is a lot of bedrock from there in and even with a high clearance vehicle, it is a very slow ride, nearly an hour from the Moose to Squaw, which is a little further than the WCL trailhead. There was a poster last year who did it in a small car, but I think it is basically a truck road beyond Otter. The last few times I went in that far, we had 4WD, but we've never had to use it.

Northern Zone Firearms Gun season opens Saturday, so the plains will not be empty.

Thanks
Thank you for the input. I made it back into the lake last week which was great. It was over 1 hour of total time on the dirt road starting at Cedar River Road.

Did you drive all the way to the trail head? How was the road to Wakely Dam? Still drivable for a "city car?" Any photos of Brook Trout?

Brook Trout Lake
Yes, drove the whole way. Was in my truck but the road was in great condition and a car would have been fine. I’ll try to upload some pics a bit later.

The road was good for a car past the Otter Brook trailhead? Thanks for putting up some photos.
