Furniture delivery by canoe

I got out to the Salmon River reservoir on Sunday for my first canoe day of the season. It's an 8 mile trip each way and I like to ride my bicycle. On the way up I saw a table with 4 nice chairs and two battered ones at a yard sale, and thought the sign said $25, so I figured if they were still there in the afternoon I would take a look. They were indeed $25 for all when I got back, so I decided to see if I could carry it all home with me, instead of having to come back by car. It was only two and a half miles, and downhill overall. I got some odd looks from passing motorists, for some reason.

And yet, the cardboard box appears empty. Were they not selling the china?
Nice haul.

Now that's "thinking out of the box".

No problem, he had a chair..... "get back, Simba". Now that would have made the news.

I'm sure he didn't want to risk his $25 furniture whacking a dog in the skull...

Luckily there were no loose dogs on the way home, but I had a couple of chairs that I would have been willing to sacrifice in such a cause, if necessary. I'm planning to put them on the free section of Craigslist, or out by the road. They look to have been left out in the weather at some point, but the other four are quite nice(by my standards). I guess this was a preliminary yard sale, it was just furniture and big baskets and such, but the proprietress said that she'll have a lot more small stuff to sell out of a tent this coming weekend. I always keep the box on the bike in case I want to carry something, and if there's a chance of rain I carry a backpack cover with me that also works as a banana box cover. When I take this furniture with me in the move to the Adirondacks I'll do it by motor vehicle, but the bike and canoe seem to work better than I had expected locally.

Read Planet Walker by John Francis. He gave up using fossil-fueled transportation for over 20 years and had accounts of using grocery store carts to move. When he got tired of arguing with people about what he was doing he stopped talking, for 17 years. And he played banjo all the while. Lots of stuff on youtube, but the book is really a good read.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll look for that book. It sounds interesting. I can almost imagine myself pushing a shopping cart 125 miles once, but I'd have to make a lot of trips to move the whole workshop and all, so I'll just be impure and drive, I guess.

Hey Zach...when it comes time for you to make your move, I'd be willing to help you with my pickup or driving a rental truck.

Tim, that's very kind of you indeed. I'm not sure yet if I'll be renting a truck or if I'll be able to move more gradually with my little 5x8 trailer, I guess it depends on how the timing goes. Thank you very much.

A Chairful canoe trip. Years ago pioneers used freighter canoes to haul everything.
