I see many questions pop on the forum that could be easily answered by perusing the DEC website.
http://www.dec.ny.gov/ You can easily drill down to subjects of interest by progressively clicking on the topic in the left panel. For example the outdoor recreation sub-page: http://www.dec.ny.gov/62.html You want to know about regulations? Check here: http://www.dec.ny.gov/regulations/regulations.html And beyond from there to specific pages on hiking and camping and anything related to the use of outdoor lands and waters. You have access to a tremendous amount of extremely useful information. Best of all it is not "hearsay".
