Cedar river and the Flow

Paddled the Cedar River flow and as much as possible of the Cedar river upstream from the flow.
We saw a Bald Eagle overhead, a big buck at the waters edge, several Great Blue Herons, a family of Mergansers, many Kingfishers, a huge Brown Trout, and the biggest, baddest a$$ leaches ever. We also heard a low, long, tuba sound coming from the SW corner of the flow...likely a female moose.
Put in at Wakely dam and paddled upwind to the start of the Cedar River. The current at the start of the river was surprisingly strong, and there are a few strainers along the way, all can easily be paddled around. The clarity of the water and the lack of signs of mankind made for a great wilderness feel. We paddled to Carry leanto, had a snack, and then went as far up the river as we could, about 0.1 mile upstream from Little Squaw Brook. The river was very pretty, with many twists and turns, clean sandy bottom and cold!
If you've never paddled this piece of water, I highly recommend it.
Here's a couple photos to give you an idea, all of the photos are here:

Oh, and the horseflies were horrendous, I got bit right through my shirt!! No other bugs except a few blackflies at the put in.
Also, saw a pair of PB Rapidfires at the leanto when we passed back downstream...were those from someone here??

Great pix and great weather. The Cedar is underappreciated

Hmm, I'm looking for a day trip for tomorrow. I'll have to look into this as I haven't heard of it.

Just for a benchmark...we started on the water around 10:30 AM and were at the leanto by about 1:00 PM, without any heroic efforts. Return trip was quite a bit faster.

Paddled part of it last year didn't get to the river section as someone else was running out of gas. Perhaps next time. The dirt road leading to the dam just seemed to go on for ever, is that Cedar River Road?
