Thru-hiking the Finger Lakes Trail (a significant portion of which is also the North Country Trail) has been in the back of my mind for a while... unfortunately, I don't think this year will be the year I do it.

There is some really nice hiking the FLT across central NY, though. The trail alternates between forested land and pastoral farmland. There are some beautiful campsites as well. And solitude isn't at all hard to find as the trail gets much less use than more popular backcountry destinations in the Adirondacks and Catskills.

I've had chance to walk some of the Southern Tier/Oneida/Rome portions of it and I like what I saw. You're right about the remoteness part. Unless you're practically in shouting distance from a town there aren't typically many people on it.

I'm considering doing this one in a series of 15-25 mile day trips. Like you said though, not sure if this will be my year.
