Black Bears
Tho I'm not in the Adirondacks I thought you folks would enjoy hearing that less than an hour ago while my wife and I sat on our back porch, a mother bear and 5 cubs, yep 5, came through our backyard within 30ft of where we sat.
That's 8 different bears we've seen this yr. One could live many lifetimes and never hear of 5 cubs let alone see them. I got 2 photos. Incredible. We're in SNY se of Bingo Town. |

I was tending my schwenker BBQ a couple of weeks ago when I heard a commotion along the roadside. I thought it was Max, a neighbor's big chocolate lab dog being walked, as he often romps up my driveway and into the woods along side of the road. Max, you sure are making an unusially lot of noisy ruckus today. Upon closer inspection that was not max, but a medium size black bear rushing across the road and right up my property line 100 feet from me toward the back of my land where there is a spruce swamp. Since then I always take the cooking grate down from the tripod chaIn over the fire pit when I am finished cooking and put it safely away.

Awesome! I was told by a very reliable source you can tell the age of a bear by how far apart the ears are. Further apart=older bear.

Fascinating stories and photos in this thread!
I had my first ever bear "encounter" this morning in Allegany State Park. It wasn't much of an encounter. He scampered away from me before I even had a chance to shout in his direction or take my camera out of my front pocket. I saw him for a good five seconds and that was it. |

Looking directly into the eyes of a wandering bear is not a good idea. It pi$$es them off. I know from experience. The bear rushed me only to stop 25 feet from me in a false charge. From then I always made lots of noise and never stared into eyes again. Scared the ---- out of me. This was mucho years ago in Connecticut of all places where I attended college after getting out of the "service".
