DEC plans to remove two fire towers

DEC recommends removing the fire towers on St. Regis and Hurricane but keeping the one on Wakely.

removing a fire tower sounds expensive. The state isn't exactly overflowing with extra money.

Good point, but this was merely an announcement of the UMP and the discussion period. It doesn't mean that once approved, the state will be headed up there any time soon to knock them down. However, I am OK with that if it ever happens, as neither Hurricane nor St. Regis Mountains need a tower to offer great views, and the land is classified as wilderness.

I would miss the Hurricane Tower because it's such a landmark, probably more so than any other tower.

The Hurricane Tower is a distinctive and highly recognizable landmark throughout the Eastern High Peaks area and the Champlain Valley (including over on the Vermont side and on the lake itself),

The "Skyline" just wouldn't be the same without it and it would feel like I lost a friend if it's gone.

Me too! I've climbed it (by holding and pulling myself up the handrail) even without the stairs. I sure hope that it is not ever removed. If it is, it won't be the end of the world, but i'd feel the loss in my heart.

I live near the Hurricane tower, and in fact can see it from the point at my place. I and many other people in the region would be heartbroken if it were to be removed. We will do everything we can to see that it is protected, as have been so many other "non-conforming" structures.

As for the St. Regis tower, I never go to it or see it, so for all I care it can be torn down. Ummmm, NOT.

Quite frankly, to me its bad news. I like the towers, and hope they can be saved.

Not much of a Wilderness or Primitive Area with towers in them.

Hurricane/Jay Mt studies

I hope to attend the DEC meeting (postponed from last night) when it's rescheduled. I read most of the documents they prepared and found them quite interesting, exhaustive, and informative. They can be found at: http://readme.readmedia.com/DEC-Rele...-Areas/1151037
