When driving to Lake Lila is it easier to come from the east or west on lake Lila access road.

Only way to reach Lake Lila access is to drive past Little Tupper a few miles, then turn left onto the Lake Lila access road. There is a DEC sign. It's about 6 miles to the parking area. Land along the road is private until you reach the parking area.

Yeah, the approach from the East (off of Route 30) is the only approach to Lake Lila. The roads to the West of the lake are gated and private (and I'm not sure there's a way to drive all the way through on that side of the lake in any case).
