Very nice tr and photos and condolences on the loss of your friend and mentor.

I'm planning on doing this loop in a couple weeks. Although I will not be able to match your pace, if I can complete it in 3 solid hiking days or just a little bit less, including a bit of a night hike, I'll be very happy.

Thanks for posting, that's some fast hiking and you certainly got a lot of very nice pictures along the way.

I recently used a portion of the Northville Lake Placid trail as a motel while transiting the ADK's. Parked at a trail head, hiked in two miles in the dark, made camp at designated site, hiked out in the morning. Much easier trai than a peak. Since then I have been looking at the (NPT) but am intimidated by logistics (shuttling and overall distance).

Your write up of the CL50 really makes it attractive to me. Especially since it looks like all sections are passable if one is intrepid.

Thank you.

tender, thanks for bumping, makes me even more excited to start my attempt at the CL50 next week! I've ordered up my last couple bits of gear and I'll assemble my gear and meals this weekend. I've been taking some long neighborhood road walks in the dark in the last week to test out my vision and lighting.

Plan is to go as minimal as I can and still have enclosed shelter and sleeping comfort. I've been crossing off more and more stuff as un-needed, looking forward to seeing how light I'll be and what kind of miles I can do.

I know some DEC rangers have given up on posting the "NPT" trail markers on the Northville-Placid Trail because they just get stolen too quickly by hikers looking to keep souvenirs. Instead, those rangers have switched back to just using the classic generic "Foot Trail" markers.

I'm sure it can be frustrating to spend time and effort remarking a lengthy stretch of that trail only to have the majority of the markers disappear within a year or two. And apparently, brand new markers are the most prized by the souvenir takers so the recently remarked sections are prime targets for the most vandalism.

I get the part about needing hiking experience, but diving? I never tried but I'm sure I would be terrible at it. I'd been looking forward to the CL50 as one of the things I want to try once I move up that way, but now I'll have to reconsider.

Yeah, I wouldn't do much diving into Cranberry lake... the water is shallow and there are a lot of old stumps
