DEC Campgrounds

Anyone hearing any rumors about the DEC opening up campgrounds? My only thinking is campgrounds need more time to mobilize their staffing and get sites ready for campers...This is getting a little ridiculous. Supposed to be 80+ this weekend and no place id rather be than sitting by a lake on a site that I booked 9+ months ago. Can't think of a better way to social distance. Worst part about it is that they don't make any announcements ahead of time. Closure order is scheduled to expire in 2 days and not a word from the state. Frustrating.

Putnam Ponds State Campground was still closed as of 6/13. The posted closed signs at the gate made no mention of re-opening.

This was just posted on Facebook by Dave McGrath of NYS Campsite Photos: (Info is from Warren County website)

"New York State officials updated members of the Capital Region Control Room, including Warren County Administrator Ryan Moore, late Monday on which NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Region 5 campgrounds and parks will be open as of June 19. This is the first weekend they could re-open.

There is good news for some but not all of the DEC campgrounds/parks in Lake George region, as Hearthstone, Luzerne and Rogers Rock are missing from the list.

The DEC hopes to have all of its campgrounds and state parks re-opened by July 1.

Here is the list of those that will be open as of Friday:

Glen Island
Lake George Battlefield
Lake George Battleground
Lake George Beach (seven days per week)
Long Island
Narrow Island
Eagle Point
Scaroon Manor
Lake Durant
Lewey Lake
Buck Pond
Lake Harris
Meadowbrook
Putnam Pond

Note: Campgrounds operated by New York Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, which include Moreau Lake State Park, are open."

One of the biggest challenges here was hiring help and getting work done in time to open, especially clean-up. They're still hiring:

DEC is seeking seasonal campground staff with all levels of experience and skill sets, including supervisors, security, maintenance, and cleaning staff, and booth workers. If interested, please send an email to campinfo@dec.ny.gov.

I camped in the White Mountain National Forest campgrounds June 7 -12, no problems. I don't understand the thinking in NY. You can walk around a Wal-Mart or Target with 300 other people, but can't camp in the mountains.

Just because people do doesn't mean that it's allowed. It's up to the store manager to enforce the "no mask no entry" policy.

Big stores, like the two I mentioned, were allowed to stay open right from the start, but some campgrounds are still closed after three months? Oh please.

Were their bathrooms open? I think that's the problem with campgrounds.

The reasoning behind stores that were allowed to stay open from the start was they provided for essential needs such as groceries, home repairs, medical prescriptions, etc. Obviously every person is allowed to either personally agree or not with that reasoning, but that was the philosophy.

I do not believe the campgrounds that have not opened yet are not doing so because they are not allowed to due to the pandemic. Each campground has likely had to try and hire staff and implement required COVID health and safety protocols. I would imagine it is a huge undertaking for each campground.

The bathrooms in the White Mountains were open. Everyone wore masks, when needed
