rent canoe with a kid

I am a high peaks hiker and my exposure to the ADK is almost solely myself and hiker friends hiking in the High Peaks.

This August I will be staying in the Placid area with my father and my 6 year old son for about 5 days. While there I plan to do some hikes like Mt. Jo and Owl's Head off 73 among others. This is really a mutl part question concerning multiple activities and recommendations - rather than post an individual question in multiple areas I thought I would post one question here and go from there as needed. I am not looking for anything crazy complicated. OK:
  • Recommendation where the three of us could rent a canoe that provides the transportation, drop off and pick up. Nothing crazy. We are not expereinced paddlers. I've been kayaking maybe 10 times. I figured a canoe would best suit the three of us going on one boat. Just want to paddle for a day or half a day in a scenic area. Maybe to an island where we can do a small hike or have lunch. Something like that.
  • Fishing - we are experienced salt water fisherman and have light weight spinning tackle. Any recommendation, perhaps where we could combine the canoe day with a little fishing. Nothing complex - just getting my son exposed. Not looking for any kind of special spot - just perhaps a lake where we might have a reasonable chance of catching something.
  • Biking - paved bike trails where we can take a day ride etc?

Like I said, we will be staying in Lake Placid area - I am willing to drive each day as far as Saranac or St Regis or whatever if needed.

Any input would be great. I am more than happy to split this thread up across multiple forums. Thanks.

Check with Brian or Grace McDonnell at in Lake Clear.

They will rent you a canoe and shuttle you and will have good recommendations for family outings. Brian runs the VIC at Paul Smiths, so you can also catch him there.

St Regis Canoe Outfitters:

They have all types of canoes and kayaks to rent, are right next to a put in on Floodwood Pond and will shuttle you the short distance to other nearby ponds.
On their website are many suggested day trips, as well as multi day camping trips.

St Regis also has a store in Saranac Lake village right next to the river. I did a short downriver trip from there last year and they picked me up at the designated spot

St. Regis Canoe area and Macs are a good option. Another would be to take a day trip to Rollins Pond Campground, rent a canoe and catch some bass. If you rent a light canoe you can do thru-trip and fish along the way.
