Bobization of EMS

We all wondered what parent company Bobs would do to EMS. A recent chat with store managers suggests a rumored plan to de-emphasize gear and EMS branded clothing and expand mass market branded clothing like Underarmour. While not official news it is probably what we expected, diminishing EMS as an ok local source to buy outdoor recreational items.

That would be a shame. Anecdotally, I noticed a much smaller number of backpacks for sale at both the L.P. and Ithaca stores a couple weeks ago....but Ithaca had dozens of what I would consider non-hiking backpacks.

It is a shame. EMS is expensive, but they did carry quality products.

It will be a shame, but not a surprise. On the one hand, EMS is a "boutique" with a narrow clientele base ... and a limited potential for growth. But on the other hand, as a boutique store it serves a function that larger stores do not replicate very well at all. Utica recently got a new Bass Pro Shop, which has all sorts of outdoor gear but is almost useless for wilderness recreation. Gander Mountain is a little better, but not ideal.

EMS has never been my ideal gear shop, but I've dropped quite a bit of money there over the years. If it becomes a generic sports apparel mall store, then that will save me future trips to Syracuse.

Let's hope REI stays independent ... and considers CNY as a potential new market.

On the other hand, I have found the Adirondack Outdoor Center in Thendara a good local resource for gear. I have been going there more often that I have EMS anyway, partly because it's much less out of my way.
