Ice conditions?

Hi folks, I know it's a little early but how's the water looking? Would like to go up there in mid April if possible. It was a cold winter, wonder if ice will be out on some of the big lakes? Thanks.

Wonder if ice will be out on some of the big lakes? The lower elevations will at least have open water, how much depends on the weather.

It's been VERY cold, and ice is very thick this year. Minus 15 (!) in Saranac Lake last night, and a high today of 18 above. Feels like spring is never coming...

No one can predict the next few weeks, of course, but things are really locked up right now.

Here's a picture of one of my favorite trout streams from this morning's walk-about in the Southern ADKs.

Not sure this will be gone in two weeks.

A lot can happen in the next four weeks.

But right now you are better off planning for late April for streams, early May for ponds. If a few waterways open up earlier than that, count yourself lucky. Right now, it looks like early February out there.

Wow! Looks like a hiking trail and not even close to a stream. Seems like I was so lucky app 4 years ago when my buddy and I paddled Long Lake and camped out that April. Didn't know what "ice out" was, now I do

Have a feeling we might have to focus on paddling South of NYC, maybe into Maryland or PA.

Minus 15 last night! Eek! Be safe everyone, Spring is officially here on Thursday!

Here is the web cam we reference for ice conditions: http://phenocam.sr.unh.edu/data/latest/arbutuslake.jpg. Arbutus lake is near Newcomb so one can estimate other ponds based on location and elevation.

LynnLynn,

I gotta say, that site is too cool!! You can look back many years and view images from every month, any day...watch the trees change color and then go bare, watch the ice form...

Loosening up...

I think, yes, the winter was cold, late. But it was a mild Nov/Dec on the other hand as well.

Go to this page if you want to see the progression of ice out over several days, note on the 17th, it was still all white!

http://phenocam.sr.unh.edu/webcam/sites/arbutuslake/

or to see by month! Kinda cool!

could see how long it took last year when the lake was similar to todays state... before complete ice-out. see if it holds true this year...

Ice Conditions

FYI - just received this email update from Raquette River Outfitters:

As of 4/24/14 the Raquette River is high and fluid. Simon Pond, Moody Marsh and Raquette Pond are also ice free. Long Lake and Tupper Lake are going fast. Upper Saranac is 3/4 ice free where as Lower Saranac seems more solid but looking dark and clearing from the edges toward the middle. Other Ponds in the area such as Panther Pond, Black Pond in Paul Smiths, Fish Creek Ponds, Follensby Clear Pond and Horseshoe Pond are ice free. Many other ponds in the St. Regis Canoe Area and Whitney still have ice.
