A lot of good expierienced advice here , Only advice I could add is follow the advice given here and start off easy . Getting up in age I find the woods comforting and tend to stay in the lowlands a little more now than trying to crawl up the peaks ,(knees are about shot ) One thing good though is most travelers are out trying to bag the peaks with the long distance views while I find sitting on a log a few miles in , in the middle of a forest surrounded by peace and quiet just as scenic ,every tree is different and there's more than a few of them ... Most of all take it slow and easy to start and read -up on this forum , there's more expierienced people here than in any book and more then willing to help, Enjoy
