Marcy Dam would fit the bill. It's a relatively easy 2 mile hike to an area with numerous campsites and a handful of lean-tos. The sites are all first come first served with the understanding that lean-tos are to be shared up to their maximum, which I believe is 8 people in most cases.

Another mile down the trail is the Avalanche Camps area which has a lean-to and several nearby campsites.

From either location, options include Wright, Algonquin, Colden, Phelps, Tabletop, Marcy among many others.

Bear canisters are required throughout this entire area. They can be rented at the High Peaks info center at the Marcy Dam trailhead. Rangers will ask you to leave if you don't have a bear canister. Fires are not allowed.

The best guidebooks typically are the ADK series of books and maps which can be found here: http://www.adk.org/category.php?pnam...uidebooks-maps
