Can be curiously frightening the first time you hear this, but definitely beavers. Some say it is done as a warning sound to their kin when intruders are detected in their area. When awakened in the middle of the night on Lila many years ago (soon after it was first opened to the public), my wife couldn't figure out why someone would be throwing boulders into the lake near our campsite.
On the small lake where I have a cabin now, I have paddled next to beavers at dusk and witnessed their multiple purposeful tail slap dives.
