Some species have specific requirements. Rainbows, I've been told, require running water. They may create beds and lay eggs, but there normally isn't enough oxygen for the eggs to survive in lakes....

They sometimes hatch off Racquette Pond in Tupper Lake so thick that the stores near there on Route 3 have to sweep them up at times. Of course, that's not trout water.
