The Poachers around my area, 30 miles west of Albany, are pros.... They have been poaching for generations and are very careful.. it will take the community’s help and quick response to catch them....

I think if the Turkeys have a successful nesting season it can make a big difference. A wet cold spring kills lots of eggs and poults.

Many fatal bullet wounds don't leave a heavy blood trail, regardless of caliber. Sounds more like a lack of follow up after the shot.

I saw a video last year w/ 2 real nice bucks sparring on someone's lawn in Old Forge. The guy said the deer there are a real nuisance and have little fear of people.

Finding a bait shop in the area is usually a good starting point. Just hanging out and making small talk could save a lot of time finding out what's working and where.
