Northville-Placid Trail, Oct 1 - Oct 7, 2013 (No trip report, just photos)

I through hiked the NPT in early October, finishing the 122 miles between Benson and Averyville in 7 days. I took lots and lots of photos along the way; you can view them here: https://picasaweb.google.com/dsettah...llePlacidTrail

I don't have time to write a detailed trip report (especially not one for a trip of this magnitude), but here's a quick summary for those who are interested:

Day 1: Benson to Piseco (25 miles)
Day 2: Piseco to Cedar Lakes LT #1 (20 miles)
Day 3: Cedar Lakes to O'Neil Flow LT (25 miles)
Day 4: O'Neil Flow LT to Hidden Cove LT (14 miles)
Day 5: Hidden Cove LT to Cold River LT #3 (10 miles)
Day 6: Cold River LT #3 to Moose Pond LT (16 miles)
Day 7: Moose Pond LT to Averyville (8 Miles)

Obviously, I got off to a speedy start. I definitely could have kept it up if I wanted to, but I slowed down mainly to snag a few lean-tos I'd not camped in yet, and partially because the weather took a turn for the worse during the second half of my trip.

My total pack weight was 43 pounds, 13 pounds of food and 30 pounds of gear. I did not do any re-supplies or food drops, as it was kind of a spur of the moment decision to hike the trail and I didn't have time to plan anything like that out. I also was carrying 8 days worth of food, as I'd originally planned to do the trail in 8 days, but was able to finish a day early. I definitely noticed the pack weight at first, but after about 2 or 3 days, it no longer bothered me (plus I was losing nearly 2 pounds of food per day). It also helped, I'm sure, that I lost 8 pounds of body weight while hiking the trail.

You met "The Hobo" I see. :) Great photos.

I felt like I hiked the whole trail from my living room. I concur on the photos!

Nice photo log, DS.
Kind of cool that my car made it into your album.
Must have just missed you on the Durant to LL section.

Excellent pics! I got to see the sections I haven't visited yet. Just makes me want to get out there more.

Fantastic photos! They bring back a lot of memories from when we did the NPT in 2009 (in 13 days) - albeit with some big and small changes to the trail, and some things that I didn't notice when we went through. Thanks a lot.

That was really great. Thanks.

That was really cool, just got to visit some of my favorite places, thanks!

DSettahr,

Thanks for that description and especially for those photos. I spent my entire lunchtime yesterday toggling between your photos and an online topo map, following your route.

For a variety of reasons, I haven't been able to get away from work/home for a while.
I'll not cry on anyone's shoulder, but you have to be careful what you wish for...

A vicarious trip via your photos was just what I needed to be able to hang on for a bit longer.
Oh, and the photos are pretty darn good too!!
Thanks again.

Great photos/report. So what's in your "special energy drink?" :)

I'm guessing it is 'bath salts'.

Pretty impressive, DS!

I am not sure I could cover that many miles by car in 7 days plus take as many great photo's as you did.

Speaking of photography, do you make an entry in a log or notebook after each photo? Because if you tell me it's all from memory when you get home, I want to be your agent and sign you up as a Vegas act :-)

Thanks for sharing.

Nice..

It's pretty much memory. It helps that some sections of the trail, I've hiked multiple times, so I'm pretty familiar with much of the trail. But I also have a photographic memory when it comes to navigation and remember where I've been.

By the way, the 380 or so photos presented here are the ones that "made the cut." Many of them are comprised of digital panoramic composites of multiple photos. All told, I took nearly 2,000 photos on this trip.

Awesome, D!
2,000 photos... Wow!
Did you bring extra memory cards with you?
Any videos?

Yes, I typically carry a backup memory card and ended up using it in this case.

No movies... I've thought about trying to do some videos on my hikes but haven't really decided on how I'd like to do it.

Is it an optical illusion, or is the deacon's seat on the Mud Lake lean2 really broken in half?

There is a make-shift table attached to the front of the lean-to.

Ordin Aryguy 11-15-2013 01:01 AM

Thanks. Was worried. Getting materials to that one is, ah, interesting.
