The Knopfler piece, which gets huge kudos from fans for songwriting, is actually derived from the old Appalachian ballad "500 miles" (not the kumbaya one that everyone sings around the campfire, this one is a modal fiddle tune with lyrics.) I got some grief from people a few years ago for using "Shady Grove" for a tune. I didn't even hear that I had the same melody with different metric emphasis until it was pointed out to me by the late Joe Dady, Irish fiddle and pipes and great Banjo player. My response to Joe, which Mr. Knopfler might want to use also, was, "but Joe, it's the folk process."

A common question for people working at Mountain Man in Old Forge and Saratoga, is "do you live in a van down by the river?" Is this where you got this, Serotonin, or is there another origin. 'Splain please.

Be prepared when you move the van to another river.

No, but I get his newsletters, and I saw the question in the employee interviews one spring. I used to rent a homemade canoe cart from him when he was still in Inlet. He's come a long way since then!! It is good to see success come to someone who works very hard and takes chances, and he did both to the benefit of himself and the communities where he lives and works.

Love Mark Knophler, he has a show on SiriusXM now. I just picked up Privateering in a trade at the Saratoga Record Riot.

For you anglers, check out Artie Traum of Big Trout Radio. #8 & #14

I learned to finger pick the guitar from Artie's brother Happy's Oak Publications book over 50 years ago. I saw the two of them together along with a very young Cindy Cashdollar on Dobro, at the Center for the Arts in Blue Mountain Lake, about 30 years ago. Artie has unfortunately passed on, but Happy was still pickin' last I heard. Both were great if underappreciated folk musicians.
