  • Little Whiteface to Whiteface Trail

Does anyone have any details about the trail from the Little Whiteface summit to the summit of Whiteface? The only place we've found any information about it is on the Whiteface website, which lists it as an "expert" hike. (https://whiteface.com/trail/whiteface-peak-trail/) and their trail map: https://whiteface.com/mountain/trail-map/. I've checked every other source I can think of, and can't find the trail anywhere with either map or description.

My wife and I were thinking of splurging on the gondola ride up to Little Whiteface and then hiking to the summit of Whiteface from there, but need to make sure it's within our abilities, since we don't really qualify as "expert," I think.

    Thanks,
    Julian

After checking, I find it very interesting (and surprising) that the trail from the Summit to the Summit Quad Chairlift is not shown on Caltopo.

Anyway, I've descended from Whiteface to the Ski Area Base Lodge before. From the Summit we've come out at (behind) the Summit Quad.

So when at the Summit Quad find the trail and start climbing. The trail is not obscure. Also note that there is a contouring trail for skiers to take to the slides. Don't follow that contour (it goes more easterly).

I think this is a different trail. It's from the Cloudsplitter Gondola on Little Whiteface to the big summit of Whiteface. (But neither is shown on CalTopo, or anywhere else other than the Whiteface web site.)

I looked at Whiteface.com under the Summer it shows a red dotted line from the Gondola that goes to the top of the Summit Quad. There the dottled line takes a sharp left, not quite 90o onto the trail to the Summit. This may be marked in the Summer. I'd ask the lift operator.

        Summer Map. https://whiteface.com/mountain/trail-map/

        Winter Map. https://whiteface.com/mountain/trail-map/

Using the Winter Map. Follow the Excelsior Trail, Stay on the ridge to The Follies which changes to Parons Run which changes (last change) to Riva Ridge.

Riva Ridge takes you the to the top of the Summit Quad. Behind the exit from the Quad explore on the uphill side that's where the non-ski run trail will be. Don't continue going straight across following the contour because that goes to the slides. There is probably a sign indicating that - I'm pretty sure a sign as I've gone that way too to get to the slides.

There isn't a hiking trail in the Ski Area. Follow the ski trails to the highest lift on the mountain (Summit Quad) then almost a 90o turn onto trail to the Summit.
