  • Browns tract camping

A friend told me of this camping spot on the island he saw, is this part of the campground or a free First come first serve sit? Legal camping? Supposedly a fire ring there.

    thx

According to my 1998 edition of Discover The West Central Adirondacks there is no camping allowed on Upper Brown's Tract Pond because of its proximity to the campground at Lower, so I would assume that the same prohibition on at-large camping would apply to the whole of the Lower Pond. From what I can see on my map that area is part of the Moose River Plains Wild Forest, so if you look up that UMP it will probably describe the camping exclusion zone, if there is one.

This map shows the campground boundary (courtesy of the DECInfo site):

As you can see, the entirety of Lower Pond, plus the east shoreline (the fairly popular beach swimming area) of Upper Pond are inside the campground boundary- and thus campground regulations would apply (including the requirement to secure a permit before camping).

Based on that map, I'd assume that primitive, first-come first-serve camping should be allowed on the rest of Upper Pond in accordance with the 150 foot rule (designated sites or at least 150 feet from the shore as well as from any trails or roads). But FWIW, the DECInfo site does not show any designated tent sites on Upper Pond.

I'm not at all interested in the upper pond but the island that's within your drawing. Seems its not a camping area.

If you like a remote campground, it's one of the best.

Update, This place was super relaxing. The island has a large rock to jump/swim off with ladders and a rope swing, super nice paddle.

Old thread, new question. Anyone know if the two Browns Tract ponds are connected? One of the few DEDC campgrounds we haven't been to, but are headed there soon and plan to do plenty of fishing in my kayak. Thanks in advance.

the 2 ponds are connected, tho there is a foot bridge and a beaver dam you'll probably to go over, both are pretty easy...

                          Hey MB, (or anyone else):

I see in an older thread here from 2017 you paddled from the Lower pond through BT Inlet almost to Raquette Lake. Curious if anyone has done that recently and how navigable it was/is. I don't mind obstacles if I'm alone, which I might be. But taking my wife and the couple that is camping with us through them might not sit well. Anyway, I think it might be an interesting trip that could conclude at the Tap Room if I get a ride or leave a shuttle down there.

I've only gone a short way up the creek from lower pond towards Raquette so I don't know the full state of it, but this route is part of the Adirondack Canoe Classic 90 miler, and is paddled fairly regularly. I remember it's extremely low clearance out of the pond into the stream. I don't recall if it's a bridge or culvert. Depending how low you're sitting, you may have to lift around it.

Thanks Ski Bum: I've done the 90-miler and been on the Inlet from Raquette Lake. It's the section from Lower Browns Tract Pond you started up to the boardwalk access of Rt. 28 that I'm curious about. Thanks again.
