    Mount Adams winter trail conditions

    Hi,

I understand that there has been some great improvements in the Mount Adams trail and fire tower. I was up there last spring before they were done and was totally impressed with the great views of Marcy, etc. I was also pleased to find out that there has been some investment in this fire tower.

I would like to take a trip up there friday (January 28, 2005) and was wondering if anyone has been up that way recently enought to give a trail report. Specifically, am I going to break trail in 2 feet of snow (for example), or is there any packed powder I can look forward to?

    Thanks

    SB

Well, it looks I am able to answer my own question. I climbed Adams on friday and the trail was predominantly packed powder with 4-8 inches of fresh snow on top of the snow-shoe packed trail. So I had to break trail for most of the way, but 2 1/2 miles is a managable task alone. Once the trail steepens (and indeed it does), I switched to crampons all the way to the summit. There were great views with only a little wind. It has been a while since I have been on any peak lately where the wind has not been a major factor on the summit. Of course, it was cold (about 0 degrees) and it doesn't take much to make it a factor.

I got great pictures of all the peaks with the makings for some nice panoramas but when I got home, because of some glitch in my digital camera, I lost them all! I guess I'll have to go back!

I lose a few when my NiMH batteries decide they're too cold to provide juice and the camera 'freezes' in the middle of a shot. I've been toying with other battery types for winter use, and the Lithium Ion seem to be working best on the coldest of days.

I have a little fleece bag that I put my camera in. Inside it, I put one of those little chemical heater pads for your hands or feet. It keeps the camera warm enough to keep the shutter moving.

          That

          Is a GREAT idea!

Of course, the Lithium batteries last a few trips, so I have to weigh "are multiple warmers cheaper than Lithium batteries after a few trips".
