    Rocky Peak Ridge 9/29

We had intended to backpack in somewhere this past weekend but the weather didn't give us any great feelings of coperation so we settled for a day hike on Monday which was supposed to be only partly cloudy. Giant had been our first high peak a year ago but we neglected to do Rocky Peak then so, it came down to Monday.
We started this time at The Roaring Brook Trail and came up to The Zander Scott Trail on the ridge of Giant. The trail from this intersection to the intersection of Rocky Peak Trail is loaded with tremendous oppurtunities to view so much of the High Peaks...............if it's not cloudy! Most of the time you could'nt see Round Mtn. just across the road. Our hopes were that by the time we got to Rocky Peak the sun would have a chance to burn thru and reward us, but that was not the case. Going over to Rocky from the intersection didn't appear too bad, 1.1 miles, but like my daughter says nothing in the high peaks is JUST 1.1. The trail down off the ridge was not wet but still it was slippery and slick for alot of the way. We're slow and cautious by nature so we get places usually without incident so slick conditions won't hurt our time schedule. After eating a second lunch on top of Rocky Peak we guessed we had given the clouds all the time to dissapate that we could so we started back around 2:00pm and decided to take the Zander Scott all the way back to rte. 73 and walk the road back to the car. I'm not sure how the milage compares but there is no rock hopping down the shoulder of the highway. Make much better time.
When you get those near cloudless, crystal clear days kind of makes you forget these sort of days when all your hard work got you was a peak bagged! Still and all it was another great day in The Adirondacks with my daughter.

Congrats on a good hike with your daughter. That's a steep descent from Giant to the col, eh? Too bad you didn't have a clear day. Now you have a good excuse to go back...the view from RPR are awesome!

Sweet - a day on a mountain with your daughter. Who cares what the weather is like - that's priceless.

Yep, the past few days are for enjoying the hiking and the company, not so much the views. It's wonderful that you're out hiking together, which can be so tough to arrange and schedule. Cherish that always, and definitely sneak back for the views!

          enjoy,

I'm piggy-backing on this thread as I was up Rocky Peak Ridge on the 4th (so soon after this one). Of course, I came from the Blueberry Cobble direction, over Bald Mountain, and so on.

At points, it was actually briefly snowing lightly way up high. No real accumulation, although some dark pockets had enough snow already for 2 snowballs tops. Otherwise, this entire hike was a trip through autumn colors, green at base, yellow/orange views on the way, and rich views of deep red from the top. The sun temperature was around 50 F (10 C) with wind around 20-25mph (32-40kph) along the ridge. It was overcast for most of the day, but the late afternoon had some beautifully sunny moments.

Sounds great! I had a similar experience this past March when I climbed Giant and RPR. Thanks for sharing!

I agree with your daughter about that "1.1" in question. I am usually a good one to gauge distance, but I sure was happy to be hanging out on RPR after that stretch. But then again, I did have to go back...
