    Algonquin, 9/7

Short and sweet. Beautiful day, lots of nice people on the trail. Trail was in good shape, dry and clean except for a few puddles. There is a small re route on the Van Hoevenberg trail just after crossing the Mr. Van ski trail, to avoid the eroded hill. Waterfall on the trail was almost dry, just a trickle. Great afternoon jaunt!

Just the day before we did Alg-Iro in a whiteout and enjoyed a torrential downpour with hail while returning over Algonquin's cone.

There were lots of nice people on the trail and one big hive of angry and aggressive White-faced hornets too.

You know, I had read about the hornets in a previous post. The post indicated the hornets were between the waterfall and the Wright spur, so we went quickly and carefully through there, staying on the rocks, and not pulling on the trees or branches. We did not see any sign of them. It was cooler, so maybe they were sleepy.

(Neil, what were you doing up there on Saturday? Saturday wasn't much of a day for a "view hike." I went bushwhacking in the lowlands on Saturday!).

        Algonquin/Iroquois/Shep Tooth

I also hiked this hike on 9/7. Same trail report as previously listed. The herdpath to Shepherd's Tooth is very overgrown, but not hard to follow. Follow the cairns off the Iroquois summit cone. It took us about 35 minutes round trip to do the Tooth.
As for the hornets, they were very active on Sunday. An older gentleman was swarmed on his way up and stung several times. We saw him at the spur trail to Wright, he said that Benadryl kept him going. On the way down, we took turns going past trying not to send too many vibrations. Low and behold as I was going under, some knucklehead took a picture and the flash sent the bees out of the hive at me. I was lucky to escape with one sting on the back of my head that immediately swelled and left me woozy. Luckily I am not allergic as it could be deadly if somebody is. The rangers have been notified of the hive, and are trying to figure out what to do with it.
I still have a very swollen and sore head today. It actually turned black and blue and spread to my ear. Nasty little suckers.

Some time ago a gang of us had planned a weekend at the Ark Trail Inn near Keene and the plan was to hike on Saturday and party on Saturday night. Also, I wanted to show my wife what a wonderful hike it was over Algonquin to Iroquois.

So much for your credibility with your wife, eh?

My daughter and I also climbed Algonquin,Iroquois and Wright to get our 11 month total to 18 peaks. We're the slow hikers so I'm sure we saw nearly everone on that hike yesterday. What a day for views! Marcy and Algonquin are always a crap shot as to what the weather will be. Chalk up for for our side this time.
