After reading TR's about the amount of rain the HP's got last weekend decided to skip a Flowed Lands backpack this week and let things (hopefully) dry out. I spent Monday night at the Ark and was at Corey's at 6:00 AM. It was a cloudy damp cool morning. The lower 2/3rds of the Calkins Brook HP was actually in very good shape. I was surprised that the water level at the crossing wasn't higher. The upper 1/3 was a different story--Very muddy and slippery--The trail closes in on you the higher you get and I was soon soaked from squeezing through vegetation. I hit Donaldson and was treated w/ some nice views, and a little bit of sun. The trip over to Emmons was a bog in several spots--deep boot and gaiter sucking mud pits.
Things began to cloud up while I was on Emmons and there was distant rumbles of thunder. Back through the mud bogs and I headed for Seward. It was steep rocky rooty and muddy all the way over. As I approached the top the clouds moved in and before I knew it I was in a cloud. Thick as pea soup--It was kind of neat but it was cold and very damp. I couldn't help thinking of American Werewolf in London Had to go--Back to the col and down the CBHP and the long walk out under threatening skies. Back at the car at 5:30. A good day by Sewards standards--Soaked, muddy, twisted ankle and swollen knee.
