    Jay and Saddleback

A brief report on this very nice hike. Val, Nancy, Mike and myself completed the loop in nine hours. The weather was fine, some rain to wash away the sweat and moderate temps. We spotted a car off Saddleback and went in at Jay. Jay turned out to be an extremely nice walk. The views from the ridge were great. Mid-way across the ridge we ran into a carin which looked like a Buddish shrine, very interesting. If you have not done the Jay ridge do it, very nice. From the end of Jay we bushwack across the second bump off Saddleback, a rocky bump with some good views. At this point the skies open up with a very pleasant shower. We reached the summit of Saddleback dripping wet but the sun returned and we spent some time drying out. From Saddleback we wacked down the shoulder thru a variety of vegation. We did not go over Frenyea because our car was somewhat to the west of this hill. We worked our way over the western shoulder of this hill. Once on the road it was a short walk to our spotted car.

Great day with some great hikers. Sorry no pictures from me because of the photo conditions. Maybe Nancy will share some with the community.

What about bugs? No one has been reporting bugs. Does that mean there aren't any? Planning a hike next week-end and hope that is the case!

I did these a couple of years ago with a large group, but in reverse, starting with Saddleback. We came out on Jay in the fog, so I vowed I would go back for the views. We did so last year with JoeCedar, followed the ridge to the end, and were treated to incredible views all along the way. One of my favorites!

          Bugs

I'm one of those fortunate people, most of the time, bugs don't seem to like me.

The bugs were not bad. On the ridge, on the summits, etc. no bugs. As we bushwacked after the rain off Saddleback our group did experience some bugs.

So out of a nine hour day about 1/9 was spent with bugs. Not bad!
