    Panther Gorger Lean-To

I'm planning a trip this weekend to hike to lower range and swing back for Colvin and Nippletop and there was rumor that the lean-to on the AMC maps at Panther Gorge doesn't exist anymore - anyone know if this is true and any suggestions?

The Nat. Geo. map is way off in it's lean-to location, but it's there. I camped in the Panther Gorge lean-to last Thursday night. It is a mere 100 feet or so from the trail junction (4 Corners/Haystack/Elk Lake) going toward Elk Lake, as opposed to the 3-tenths mile as indicated by the ADK-National Geographic map. I missed it in the dark because of that map, and am not very pleased with the accuracy.

I got an e-mail back from some director of something which said the panther gorge lean-to is there. DEC Rangers and JBL people both say its not, I agree, the map needs to be corrected, we, when hiking in that region really depend on shelter.

How often do they publish those maps?

The reports of the Panther Gorge lean-to's demise have been greatly exaggerated! Photo taken last Friday morning.
