Woohoo! I'm a Winter 1er. Went out to climb Esther and Whiteface with my friends Marc and Jean, whom have previous winter experience. We started pretty late from the Wilmington reservoir, 10am, so we were expecting to use our head lamps at one point of our descent. Although the snow was not thick at the bottom, we use snowshoes all the way except for the last mile of the descent. A snowshoe with good crampons was enough. Crampons were not needed. The trail was filed with wind blown snow from Marble Mtn to Esther. At noon, the weather was 0F(without windchill), but we were ready for worse. It took us a bit longer than expected. At 2pm, we had reached Esther and back to the junction. Our bodies were a bit tired as it was our first hike in a while. I had forgotten my poles in my trunk when we did a car switch before the border. Lets just say I missed my poles. We could have continued for Whiteface, but decided that with the time it was, the wind and a bit of fatigue, that it would be reasonable to head back. We were glad we did.
We had nice view from Marble Mtn on our way back. We had a blast on this day, we laughed alot, at times due to nice wipe-outs when racing down in the powder. It was a very good day.
