    Snowy Mountain -2/23

What a fantastic day for a climb up this "near" high peak.

We got a late start and didn't step onto the trail until 10:30, but that turned out to be a good thing as two groups - seven people total - were already ahead of us breaking trail.

The first 2/3 of the trail were easy going. A nice gradual climb through the forest with a few stream crossings (nothing to worry about there, thankfully).

The last 1/3 of the trail is like climbing a ladder ... straight up for little more than half a mile really taxes your quads.

But the snow was firm and actually a little bit icy right before the summit.

Great views of Indian Lake and the High Peaks from the eastern ledge and a fantastic 360 view from the fire tower.

A very pleasant snowshoe hike. Seven miles round trip, we were back to the car by 4:15 (three hours to the top, an hour up there for looking around and eating lunch and only two hours back down - thanks to sliding down that steep section).

Snowy Mtn. is one of the best hikes in the Adirondacks, bar none. Now that the firetower is restored enough to catch a view, it's even better than ever.
I've never made it up there in the winter. Tried once, a thaw made the stream crossings deadly dangerous so I had to turn back.
But I've been up there in the autumn several times. Beautiful.

It's been on my list to do this winter but not done yet.

Great view of the Siamese Ponds Wilderness from the top of Snowy. I didn't do it in winter. Coming out the last half mile was one painful step after another from the beating my knees took. Stupidly, I didn't take my knee braces.

It was however worth the effort and the pain.

Well, Hamilton County has gotten even more snow since I was up there and is scheduled to get a few more inches tonight. I would definitely head up Snowy if looking for a great snowshoe hike. Can't beat the views on a clear day.
