Henderson Lake Preston Pond Ski Trip

We left Upper Works parking area Saturday 2/16 about 1PM. It was sunny and very nice temps, 20 ish . Skiied across Henderson Lake ; snow was great good consolidation breaking trail very easy , but there were a couple of parties ahead of us so the trail was good. We used sleds to haul our gear, and were at the new lean-to by 2:30 .We ate lunch then skiied around the lake and got back to the Lean -to about 5:15. We had company about 6:45;A.J. and Tim from the Albany area, they were snow- shoeing. ( sorry I forgot to leave address at register guys, hope you see this and contact me)
Sunday AM was - 12 F; not bad, no wind and sunny. We skiied to Preston Ponds, snow was fast, hard , not much kick, we wished we had skins. We ran out of sun real fast, warm front was coming in . Preston Ponds were beautiful , clouds were really wild. We had lunch on Lower Preston Pond and then headed back and that 's when it started to spit ice balls at us , but it didn't last long. We skiied back to the lean-to and it started freezing rain around 5 PM. It rained off and on all night but stopped after breakfast Monday , and we had an easy ski back to the car. This is a beautiful area, really worth exploring and the trip all the way to Duck Hole is really great . Mike D.

Hey Mike! It's Tim from the leanto at Henderson! Welcome - you're gonna like it here!

Dying to get back out there as soon as possible - after AJ to go again next weekend already!

Mike! What are you doing in the land of technology?! Does this mean that you'll be reading emails too? Had to give you a little teasing there!

Welcome! And a heads up to everyone-Mike is a former winter school instructor and a great guy.

Guess who. (she who rescued a lean-to that weekend with six other hardy souls-and yes it was brrry brrry cold)

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass.
It's about learning to dance in the rain.

            Duck Hole update

            Hi lovers of Duck Hole,
I'm the lean-to adopter of Duck Hole for the last 18 years. As alot of you know , the dam is in really bad shape there, and it's future is in question .
There is a new ranger in the area , Del Jeffrey, he is very entheusiastic about saving Duck Hole. He has some ideas on how to replace the dam, and what to do with Preston Ponds and new campsites there as well as Henderson Lake. I had a great conversation with him last weekend when I was on my ski trip to Henderson and Preston. Keep the faith .... I think Duck Hole will live on .

              Sounds good Mike!

If you have his email address, would you PM me with it?

I've put in a request to adopt the Duck Hole Dam. The DEC has been reviewing it, and doing the necessary research/public hearing stuff before they'll approve it.

              Thanks!

There is a lean-to at the north end of Henderson Lake, right at the point where the trail to the Preston Ponds veers inland. It's made of pre-shaped lumber and a little ugly in my opinion. It was built in 2004, I believe.

Is there room around this lean to for setting up tents? I like to be able to use the lean to for cooking/ gathering and then have my tent set up somewhere close for shelter. Lean-tos are too cold in the winter.

Not really a lot of room for tents there, unless you set-up on the trail. I've seen that done before...
