Short trail report for this approach to Dix.. the trail is now broken to Dix from Rt. 73. Four of us plowed through 18 inches of snow to reach the summit. This approach to Dix is pretty steep, luckily the snow provided good footing. Yes, it was deep and powdery but underneath it was firm enough for good snowshoe traction.
We began around 7:45 a.m. and reached the summit around 2:40 p.m. Yes, seven hours one way for a trip Barbara McMartin states is 9 hours round trip. So you can guess how time is eaten when trailbreaking.
Overall the weather conditions on Saturday were not bad. As we reached the summit, the snow squalls, dense cloud cover, and wind reminded us of mother nature's power over us.
I had hoped to reach Hough on this day but the time and conditions were not right. Once on the summit it was a few pictures, some hot tea, and a quick glance at our surroundings. Than off the mountain to our cars.
