    Autumn on Ampersand

Last weekend I was up on the north side. Made a few new hiking friends and up Ampersand it was. Unfortunately, about 15 mintues before the summit the girl got bitten by a dog in the calf. I've dealt with dog bites before so I knew how to treat it and what to tell her but I did have that moment of surprise when I elevated her leg and the adipose tissue came squirting out. Gee, I'd forgotten about that. Another guy watching from over my shoulder looked like he would pass out right then and there. I was more worried that she wouldn't get on antibiotics because she's one of our northern neighbors from across the border, but that worked out fine. Quite a trooper as she continued to the top to enjoy the day.

Stunning colors. Wendy and Brian left after a couple of hours as they were driving home, but I stayed on top almost four hours. It was grand central station in the first area when we arived but the top cleared off by the time I left. We went over to the eastern end of the ridge and spent the afternoon by ourselves anyway. Wendy brought the most delicious cheddar cheese! Canada really has great cheese if what Pete has given me and Wendy's cheese is representative of Canadian market cheese. Wendy and I traded recipes while soaking up the sun. The Ampersand chipmunk entertained us all.

I was enthralled with looking out over the entire Seward area since I've spent so much time in there this year. I was quite pleased to point down and say that's where I slept last night.

Earlier this summer a friend asked me if I'd ever been up Ampersand. No, I hadn't. He said I really had to go in the fall. Well, as usual his advice was right on the spot as Autumn on Ampersand was a class 1 day.

Wow!! Really nice photos, now I have to go there.
Too bad some folks have defaced the rocks with their egotistical etchings. Where were the last few taken?

          Middle Saranac Lake.
From the parking pulloff for Ampersand is also a trail for a short, .6 mile, path to Middle Saranac Lake. That's right there at the end of the path. Quite a gem isn't it?

I just grabbed my camera and a flashlight when I went down to the lake. As I was taking pictures of the sunset my camera batteries kept dying and the camera repeatedly shut down. I'd turn it off and on and squeeze out another picture. Well, it messed up and the camera "lost" the pictures, all the pictures of the mountain. It said I had to reformat and that it had no pictures in review. Got home, went on VfTT and asked for advice. $30 and four hours later I had my pictures recoverd using "photorescue". PHew! That was close!
