Street and Nye 7-31-07..the Buffalo Group!

I'm just getting a chance to post now because our vacation continued for a while after our "peak bagging". We had a great day doing these two mountains!!!! I was very pleasantly surprised!
When I first started hearing about these two, it was still the "old Days" and people had stories about getting lost for hours. Now the 46ers are doing a marvelous job designating one path. Pete Hickey and his crew have also cleared away most of the blowdown from 2005. There is just a tiny bit here and there that you givers you a chance to stop, think, then and have some fun going under, over or around.
I'm saying "Pete and his crew like I know then, but its just from this forum. I would like to get to know then and figure out some way to help though. I was so impressed with their work. They gave us a great day in the woods!
The path was easy to follow. I appreciate all the responses to my queries before this trip, and I also found Joel Dobson's Adirondack Journey web site very useful. Two big tips:

Always cross Indian Pass Brook where the cairns tell you too!

Don't bother looking for the logging camp artifacts until you are on your way back...you will see them if you look straight ahead before one of your corssings of the brook on the way back.

    Nye mtn.

Nye was special for us. It was number 20. We also dedicated that entire day of hiking to Colin Fletcher, because we just learned at the beginning of our trip that he had passed away.

There is a lovely view from Street. You can see from the haze in this picture and all the perspiration in the last that it was a hot and humid day! There was a refreshing breeze on Street though. (#21 for the intrepid trio from Buffalo)

To get to the actual paths for the mountains, you'll come to a little plateau. There is a tree there, marked with an S for Street and an N for Nye. The plateau is carpeted with needles, and makes a good place to stretch between summits too!

This was a fine hike. The trails were mostly excellent, and not much "traffic" along the way. We only ran in to your group and another group of 3 that day. It made for a great, leisurely hike.

It was very nice meeting you, and thanks for ensuring we were headed in the right direction! Hope to see you out on the trails again!

It was nice meeting you too! Our pleasure sharing directions...we just knew where we were going thanks to topo maps, old TR's from this site, and Adirondackjourney.com, another webiste I frequent before every trip. Happy hiking! We have one more trip up north scheduled, and then we'll have to wait until next summer. Hopefully we'll be at #24 next month!

                  Ditto

Our family group, ranging in ages from 9 to 71, hiked Nye and Street on 8/14 and I want to repeat the same "Thanks!" to all those who have improved the trails in this area. After reading about all the horror stories for years, we were ready for anything and ended up totally enjoying a beautiful, multi-facted hike in the woods. There's just enough challenge left to remind you that this is a herd path, but almost all of the worry is gone. Awesome job!

We spent a lot of time at the the brook, took lotsa pictures at the swamp, and my wife even spotted the old camp remnants on the way UP (kudos to her for looking around and smelling the roses while her old man monitored progress and whereabouts on the GPS). Once on the ridge leading to the Y, the look-back was awesome.

After the Y, the two youngest girls (9 and 12) ran up Nye ahead of the rest of us. Minutes later we found them with their hands in the air saying "Hey, where's the summit?!?" We started laughing - unknown to them they were standing directly under the Nye Mountain sign! Now that made for some great photos which we'll never let them forget as the years go by...

Street was a great rest stop and provided us with views of the MacIntyres you just can't get from most other peaks. One note - many had told us to take the right trail, not the left trail, from Street's summit to get good views. Well, they both lead to the same place - which is a good thing.

Awesome trail, awesome hike, awesome view, and another awesome family outing. Can't wait 'til the next one...
