    Allen

Had a great day on Allen Saturday. I really like that hike for all it's varied terrain. Love the water slides on the way up the Mtn. And the few outcrops on top offer unique views of the peaks.

We met a few friendly people on the trail--about 10 altogether. I guess that makes it a pretty busy day on Allen.

When I did Allen three years ago, I saw a moose. This time we saw moose tracks in the clear cut section of the trail. I would like to know if others have seen moose in this area.

The trip took about about 9.5 hours at a relaxed pace.

For me, the first time in the hihg peaks since Spring--so I was excited!

What do moose tracks look like? Did you take a photog?

Weehaa! Really, 9.5 hours RT???? I've been told that Allen is an overnighter.

I think it's because of the first 5-6 miles being on an old access road. I average almost 3 miles per hour full stride (I'm 6' 3"), so that part would be done in about 2 hours (4 RT), then the 3 miles of foot trail to summit at 1 mph (assuming the climb slows me that much)... add another 3 hours (6 RT)... 10 hours sounds about right, and my hike times are with frequent breaks and some summit time.

Hopefully next Saturday I'll be able to compare my times up Allen (though I won't be racing it).

SAME, SAME. I did it with 3 kids (one 11, one 12, and one 13) and 6 others at a pretty normal pace. we also had a long 46er celebration on top. and it took 12 hours.

Had I hiked it with my fast moving group (at that pace), I could have done it in under 9 easily. of the 18+ miles, 15 are almost flat and you can smoke through em, if your fit enough. Unless you're really hoofing it, plan for 12 hours or so if you hike book time.

As for an overnighter, I really didn't find any spots that LOOKED all that cozy. That only MY OPINION, cause I know lots of people camp out by the base of Skylight Brook.

                Moose print

I do have Moose track picture from the trip i will post later. Basically, though, it is somewhat similar to deer, but huge.

I've seen them, and that's an accurate description.

I've never encountered a bull moose in the fall but I've heard that's when they're in the rut. I've also heard they go beserk at that time and are very dangerous. Anybody got more?
