Sat. was a great day to hike. We had cool temps. in the a.m. with plenty of warming sunshine in the p.m. By the time we were making our exit via Elk Pass the sun was baking our buns.
Mike and myself started in around 8 a.m. The lower portion of the Leach trail has some snow but it soon should disappear. Once we pasted the rock formation, just before the climb to Bear's Den, the snow increased in depth. We began our ascent in bareboots but soon switched to snowshoes. We used snowshoes the rest of the day. We removed our shoes somewhere past the Colvin/Blake junction on our way out.
By the time we reached Dial the sun was finally out and warming us. The sky was clear with few clouds. We had excellent views of the Great Range and later of the Dix and Hough. If you have taken this path you know how nice the view is from Nippletop. We could see the resort at Elk Lake clearly.
We descend via Elk Pass, the trip down was quick, if not dicey at times. The small ponds at the foot of Elk Pass are still frozen to a degree.
Overall, it was an A plus day for hiking.
Happy trails....
