What a great hike!! My brother's first high peak and my first trip to the Garden trailhead. We got there at 0715 to find it already full. Thankfully the shuttle allows dogs. We got the shuttle and started our hike around 0800.
This trail does not fool around and the ascent began immediately. It doesn't take long to get your first great views of Keene Valley and the Great Range. The foilage was spectacular, beautiful shades of red orange and yellow filled the valleys below. I think this is a very good hike to bring a newbie on because the views begin so early. The views from the 1st to the 2nd brother just keep getting better and urge you to keep going. It isn't untill the 3rd brother that you get a glimpse of Big Slide and the feat that is ahead of you but by then it is too late...you have to go on. We spent a long time on the summit and there were A LOT of people up there in a small area. It was wierd for me to see so many people crammed together on such a small summit. Soon it cleared out and we had more space. The views were great but would've been better without the haze. On our way down it started to rain once we got past the first brother.
We took our time and for a first high peak my brother did great. Gerard(my dog) as always amazed me by what he can do...nothing stops him.
