Five Ponds Wilderness Area 4/13 - 4/15 (Little Shallow)

We spent Thursday night on the floor of defunct church turned wooden boat workshop in Newton Falls. Saved the hassle of pitching tents / tarps in the rain. (Thanks Sherm). Oh, by the way, the Wanakena General Store has a prettty decent selection of microbrews. Try the growler of Rouge Ale.

We were on the Oswegatchie River at 6:30AM on Friday. We used Cage Lake Spring Hole L2 as a base camp (Rescued August 2006) commuting Friday and Saturday over water and land via a sick 'wack shortcut to Little Shallow L2.

Friday we dug the lean to out of the snow, hauled the material uphill from our cache point, and installed the deacons seat and rear logs. Saturday we returned to install the side logs and floor. We did not get the footers installed as our 20# propane cylinder with flamethrower attachment had insufficient BTU's to melt the frozen earth to enable any sort of digging. Wish we had left it at the river in the canoe, it was kind of heavy.

Weather you ask: We saw the sun peer out from behind a cloud for about 2 minutes on Saturday, the rest of the time we had rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow--- heavy at times. Lets just say it was damp. Oh, well...another added challenge.

A LOT of snow fell while we were upriver, getting out of Inlet back to Route 3was the hardest part of the trip.

Punch list items to include footers, chinking, staining, and hardwood floors to be completed later in the Spring. This L2 is now maintained and ready for your enjoyment.

Love that shot of the front of the canoe with the snowy woods!
Do you consider this work or play? Probablly a little of both, hard work, but your surroundings and helpers probablly make it a lot of fun!

You guys are amazing and your efforts will be appreciated for years to come! Although this area has been relatively ignored, the work you put in will make my favourite part (given my limited experiences there) of the dacks even more of a treasure.

There's an old hunters path that connects the Oswegathie R, 1m.+/- above Cage L Springhole leanto, with the 5 Ponds trail just N of esker. It might provide an easier shortcut then the "sick wack" when you return to complete punch list ? Let me know if you want the details

Thanks for all the hard work you've done under unpleasant conditions on the lean-tos in that area! The 5PWA is my original stomping grounds, and I like to go back several times a year.
I'm in Star Lake from time to time between May and October, so e-mail me through this site if you're looking for an extra hand.
I see from that middle picture that you have an interesting take on what a "Youth at Risk" program is supposed to be.
