    26 years later.....

On Aug 28, my lifelong hiking buddy and I finally finished what we started 26 years ago, and failed to do because of my fallen arches, namely climb Marcy from the Garden. We hadn't been back since then, as a lifetime can be spent exploring Ontario, and family responsibilities limit us to one 7 day trip per year.
Right away, I had to crush some young hemlock needles in the palm of my hand and inhale deeply.........ahhh, I was back!
Some observations 26 years later.............Where did all these people come from???. Why has the bear problem been allowed to get so bad?? I've hung food bags for 30 years in Ontario without incident, yet the second night here (L/T at JBL), our rope was cut! Fortunately, we had met a Ranger on our way in who lent us a cannister, but we could only fit our enough food to eat comfortably for 4 days, which was the intended length of our stay. All the goodies, all the neat little extras, we hung about 100yds away, across Johns Brook, which proved to be to the bear's liking! I will be buying a cannister by the way!
Next day, torrential rain from JBL to Slant Rock, flash flood warnings.......just hikin' and grinnin'.
Slant Rock L/T is amazing.....the Ranger we spoke to considers it the best in the park, and I can see why!
Marcy was of course, well worth the wait!

Incidently, 26 years ago, on a cold, foggy day in late June, I happened to look at the ground at the intersection of a side trail near Indian Falls, and written very clearly in the mud, in large letters, was this phrase "ARC TOGOTH --"

All linguistic research I've done points to no logical connection between these words, but it would not be impossible for whoever did write it to still be around, and who knows, maybe even posting on a site like this! If so, he'll know the last 2-letter word.
Anyway, loved the trip and the area, and the people we met, and I'm coming back for a winter climb of Algonquin in January!

      Kevin,

The old L/T (yes, lean-to) has been removed, but a new one has been built. Although we passed through there a few weeks ago, we didn't take the time to check out the new one (we should have). I spoke with a person camping in the area who did check it out. He said it has been relocated about 100 yds. up the hill and has wonderful views.

You're both right. The lean-to right by Slant Rock itself was indeed removed. But another one was built further up hill. There may have been a period of time between the removal of the old and the building of the new. It's worth the side trip to check it out.

            Arc Togoth --

Arc Togoth sounds a little like Klingon, but I doubt any Trekkies were that deeply into the linquistics of the show 26 years ago.
It also sounds a bit like the Dark Language of Mordor in Tolkiens trilogy.
Either way, you're probably lucky you didn't meet the person/thing that wrote it!

              Good guesses Mark.

Do a find on this page for togoth and it appears to be a class of cleric in this fantasy game. My guess is the person's name is "Arc," and their of the class "Togoth". I think dungeons and dragons (and like fantasy role playing games) were pretty popular back then.

The new lean-to at slant rock is easy enough to find if you know where to look. After crossing the brook and reaching Slant Rock, the trail turns sharply left. Don't make this turn, just continue straight, past what are either tenting sites, or perhaps the former L/T sites. It's about 100yds further along, with a very small stream for water just before you reach it.

Interesting thought , Togoth being a roleplaying term. I might as well tell all that the last word in the phrase was "TU". It seems to be a mix of greek, latin, and Mordorian language. Perhaps it has no meaning except to its' writer, but I left it scrawled in the mud early this month near JBL, just to confuse a new generation of hikers!
