    ADKForum Labor Day Weekend Camporee

Everyone has been asking about a report. So here it is.

Fvrwld (Val) and Jeff (Jeff) showed up Friday afternoon, they brought food and firewood. (Well, Val brought it and Jeff obsessed over it).

Dick (Dick),Joanne (Mrs Dick) and WildernessPhoto (Gary) showed up Saturday morning/afternoon. They brought food, beer, and firewood Kevin showed up late in the afternoon, he brought gen-u-wine High Peaks Trail stink! I properly hosed him down when he got out of the car.

Saturday was kind of a hang out, get organized (well, sorta), get acquainted (none of us had met Dick or Joann before). We sat around, ate, gossiped, ate, kayaked, ate, talked about Sacco and JudgeH, ate, had the trail Food bakeoff, ate, all of this of course around the flickering flames, er well, make that the roaring conflagration of Jeffs fire. There was a little excitement when Val, Jeff and Gary were shot at gathering firewood from the side of the road (Really). Then we sat around (well 10 feet back from) the fire and told racist jokes about Martin and Neal. (How many Canadians does it take to raise a flag?).

About three am Jeff did a poor bear impersonation outside of Kevins tent. Nothing further to report. it was a lame impersonation and Kevin isn't the brightest bulb in the lamp either.

Sunday morning we had a "camp breakfast" about three hours long. 18 Eggs, three pounds of bacon, pancakes, etc. You could actually hear everyones arteries hardening above the din. We bid adieu (said goodbye for you illiterates!) to Dick and Joann because they had some family things to take care of for the rest of the weekend. The rest of us grabbed the harnesses, pulleys, etc and went into Hamilton Lake Stream to play on the cable across the stream. I am sure that pictures will be posted.

Sunday evening was pretty much the same as Saturday evening, we ate, gathered more firewood, (no excitement this time), ate, gossiped, talked about whoever wasn't there, made fun of Sacco, ate, etc.

Monday Val had to leave to begin to get ready for the NPT hike that starts this weekend, Kevin was having "peak withdrawals" and headed North. Gary Jeff and I hiked into the first and second falls in the West Branch Gorge. We got out of the gorge about 5pm and Jeff and Gary had to head out. After a few parting shots about Canadians they were on their way.

It's funny, every year Manitowah and I have a gathering of Indians here in October and the citizens of Wells always remark about how "quiet and well behaved" they are (I guess people don't expect Indians to be that way). Today at the Post Office (the local gathering and gossip place) I had to explain that it wasn't Indians but my "Rowdy White Friends" that were raising hell all weekend.

Overall we all had a good time. Everyone left heavier and less healthy then when they arrived.

        Hey! You mispelled my name!
BTW It sounds like you had a white man fire going. You know, an indian builds a small fire and sits close and a white man builds a big fire and sits far away.

Geez, Talk about a Narsisis Complex. Did it ever occur to you that there just might be a canadian named and spelled "Neal", and that no one thought anything of you at all?

And I didn't have any kind of a fire going. It was Jeff's fire and yes, being a white man is one of his many shortcomings!

Actually "admiration" was not one of the adjectives that would be used to describe the opinions expressed.

                Redhawk, you're a trip.

For the record I wasn't exactly having withdrawl, and I'm glad I headed north and saved the gorge hike for another day -- Big Slide was a lot of fun, so much fun I'm still feeling exhausted and suspect I got dehydrated yesterday. I actually had to leave work early because I was so tired. Feeling better now (been drinking a lot of fluids today), will be back with photos soon.

I'm so glad you're back Neil!! The day after you left for the Rockies, Hawk and Sacco decided to tag team on me. (Nothing I couldn't handle though)

The Camporee was tons of fun!! Redhawk and Manitowah are great hostesses . I was supposed to leave Sunday night but couldn't bear to and ended up staying until Monday morning. The sunsets were beautiful, the fires blazing and the midnight paddles were lots of fun. I will try to post a few pics before I embark on my NPT hike.
