New Year's Day 2007 Morgan Hill

Central New Yorkers have some great little resources in our own backyard, of which the Finger Lakes Trail is one of. Today's hike has a bit of background. Every year I take my son on a New Year's Day outing of some sort. Usually it's cross country skiing or snowshoeing. Anywhere, but we must get out in the woods. This year for New Year's Eve I joined an ADK led hike to Morgan Hill with a group of ten persons having a great time for about four hours at the lean-to, carrying in the wood in our packs. And I can vouch for the fact that external frame packs can hold a lot of hardwood dimension lumber. Everyone had a super time adn there was some wood left over when we left in the wee hours of the morning.

Fast forward 9 hours and I decide why not take my son back to the lean-to for our New Year's Day hike? There's wood, there's no snow around here, we're all a bit tired, so why not! A quick email to Wildernessphoto finds him ready for an outing, so off we go!

The stream has risen again since coming out after midnight, this time making any attempt at rock hopping a defintite boot and sock wetter so we decide, or should I say Paul decided for us, to cross the bridge with half the slats. Paul just gets on and goes, albeit slowly, whereas Wildernessphoto and I use our poles, showing our cautiousness that comes with age. Now these guys really wanted to drive around to the other road and take the short way to the lean-to, NOOOOO, I said we needed the exercise! They're so nice to put up with me.

I made up for making them go in the long uphill way by pulling out of the pack (which PB graciously offered to carry) Hoffmann hotdogs for roasting over the fire and fresh apples to cut up, fry in butter and top with whipped cream!

We spent so much time eating and talking that we never got to the poker game so we'll have to go back soon. Anyway, I don't think Gary brought his poker face today so he definitely would have been on the losing team with me!

Not too sure that Kevin would approve of that paltry fire tho ...

W'Photo's fire was so darned hot it melted all the snow. Those logs were made of spent uranium were they?

Grand Day for a hike and some grillin!

BC, no chance we were going to bump into each other at Stoney Pond again this New Years Day. No snow for you and PB to ski on and too muddy for my annual start of the new year hike around the pond.

Anybody notice I posted it as 2006?!? Gary, fix the title please! Pretty please, with whipped cream!

Gary's easy to feed, after all the man is talking about eating only cold food for an upcoming backpacking trip. I just stared and said I'd bring my frying pan for some real eggs in the morning!
