    Some thoughts for you

    Neil,
Some input on your ideas. The area between Street and Lost Pond Peak is a very tough traverse, I’ve climbed Lost Pond from that side and there was a lot of blowdown. Expect a slow day.
For the Wright Slide, follow McMartin’s description to the letter and you’ll make the slide. If you don’t you’ll end up on the climbing the side of Algonquin.
    Good Luck.

What about eastward up from Indian Pass Brook and then south out to Scott Pond?

        Lost Pond

        Neil,
I don’t know how valid the information I have for attempting Lost Pond Mountain from the east, I tried it that way prior to Floyd. Besides that we started way, way to late and had to turn around before completing the climb. The route we tried was from the North and up the Scott’s Pond/Wallface Ponds trail. We followed the drainage just past the height of land north of Scott’s Pond. On the map there appears a small pond at the top of the drainage, this was a bog when I was there. From that point we corrected our heading and immediately passed through a very large spruce wave. Then for the next ½ mile it was fairly easy, but then we had to abandon our trip due tot darkness. We didn’t make it back to Heart Lake until 2:00am. Remember this was all pre-Floyd, so my information may not mean much anymore. I hope someone else out there can give you more up to date information. Still it was a nice walk.

In spite of your caveat re Lost Pond-Street I think I'll do it anyway. Being armed with the knowledge of the blowdown and the anticipated slowness of the day we'll just sit back, plug along and enjoy. Thanks for the precious feedback!

            Neil,

I climbed Avalanche Mt. (it sits between Colden and Algonquin) and I noted two things you might find useful.

            1) The aproach to the Wright Slide is sweet. Just before the Kagel Lean-to, Marcy Brook and another tributary split. Cross Marcy and follow the side tributary up into Caribou Pass. The forest is very open through there and there are whispers of old trails. No matter, the walking is easy through deciduous canopy and you'll be on the left side of the brook. After about 20-30 minute, you'll reach a second major tributary (Wright Brook, I think). It peels It's the second one from the Marcy brook split. I was coming down the pass (from Avalanche), so I never went passed this tributary to the slide, but the guys I was with had and they assured me it was equally easy going.

            2) The trap dyke looks sweet from Avalanche. No better view unless your on it

This may seem a little dumb but which LT exactly is the Kagel? I understand you go DOWNSTREAM a short ways from it to the tributary towards Wright.

What.......I'm the only nerd that bothers to learn the name of the different Lean-tos. The Kagel lean-to is the first one you come to after Marcy Dam headed toward Avalanche Camp. From from Kagel, hit the river and head right (downstream) a few feet. You'll see the confluence real quick. It's not a small tributary.

Let me know, perhaps I'll come along.

So we follow this 2nd tributary to the slide after ignoring a previously encountered one?
