Mt Adams - Trip Report & Tower Information

    Sunday, June 27

Only had a limited amount of time to sneak a hike in this past weekend so I got up early and drove up to Tahawus to hike Mt Adams. Reached the trailhead at 7:45 AM and signed into the register just before 8:00.

This is the same trailhead you use to reach Flowed Lands the long way and to get to the Allen herd path, and is approx a half mile before the end of Upper Works Road on the right.

Bugs at the trailhead itself were nasty but once I got in the woods they were not an issue.

Follow the trail over the Hudson and Lake Jimmy. After 3/4 mile you'll reach a point where the trail bends to the right and there is an old abandoned camp on your left. About 75 yards past here you'll see a couple of small cairns indicating the beginning of the trail up Mt Adams. Turn left here and start heading up.

The trail is extremely easy to follow all the way to the top and is in excellent condition. It is occasionally marked with flagging but at no point does it ever get confusing. In my opinion it is the best trail I have ever hiked on. There isn't one piece of blowdown and aside from a short rocky spot the entire hike is over nice soft ground on a wide trail.

I reached the top right around 9:00 AM and headed up the tower. The views as you climb up the stairs are simply AMAZING.

Taking a seat on one of the steps is like sitting right behind home plate at Yankee Stadium and down the first base line you've got Allen, Skylight, Redfield, Gray, Cliff, Marcy, Colden, Algonquin, Iroquois, Marshall, etc, etc, etc staring right at you. And down the third base line are the Santanoni and Seward ranges.

I sat up there about a half hour just chillin out before making the easy stroll back to the car. I ran into four other folks on my way down and looking at the register it appears that this wonderful mountain is getting a good amount of use.

I will post some pics later in the week once I find my USB cable for the digital camera.

Now for the information part. About a quarter mile up the Mt Adams trail from the cairns I noticed a large group of tents and tarps covering various stuff. As I was going up the trail it was apparent that somebody had just been through here cleaning it up. When I reached the top there was a big pile of new wood stacked up neatly under the tower.

On my way down I ran into a group of five young people from Americorps. We talked for a while and it turns out they have been up there for a few days clearing the trail and are staying through this week to repair the steps and platforms on the fire tower. They have done an incredible job and I thanked them for their efforts and let them know that a lot of folks from the hiking community will appreciate their work.

We didn't get around to talking about if/when this will become a formal trail but given the effort they have put into it I would assume that it will be marked sometime soon.

Anyway, if you want to get some bang your buck head up to Mt Adams and check it out.

Great report and news about the tower. I believe the old camp you saw, near the start of the trail up, is the original tower watchers cabin. This site was not included with predestination of the tower site. Which means the cabin may be removed. This is very unfortunate considering for a historical stand point the cabin is more important than the tower its self, as this is the only original cabin remaining in the park.
A man needs to believe in something. I believe I'll go hiking.

        Finally found my USB cable

Sorry for the delay on these - took a while to get them onto my laptop.

I don't have a website or anything (although I'd love to put something together like Mav's site which is excellent) so I'll just post a few pics here.

I also have some pics of the tower itself but won't post them unless someone really wants to see them since the tower was being rebuilt the next day.

This is a view north looking at Iroquois, Algonquin, Colden, etc.

            Great pics

Thanks for the report. The family and I are looking at doing Adams before winter. Great pics too.
How is it that you are heading west? Well, we face north and then really sudden like turn left.

                Alpine -

Yep, finished up October 2002 on top of Haystack. First peak was Cascade when I was about 12 years old in the early 80's but didn't get back up in the area until the mid 90's after college. Once I got started I couldn't stop. Now I'm already halfway through them all again tagging along with buddies on their way to 46. From some of your other posts I see you are doing the same with your wife which is great. My wife has been up a few with me but really hasn't shown much interest in doing them all - at least until I can convince here there aren't any bugs, snakes, bears, etc in the areas we'll be camping in.

                  Great photographs and trip report!

                  MD Cuse,

I enjoyed your thorough trip report and superb photographs! Mt. Adams has been on my list for quite some time. So many mountains...so little time!

I am encouraged by the work you described that has been completed by Americorps. I sincerely hope that the investment that has been made in the interest in preserving that summit, not to mention the extensive labor, materials and financial commitment will create another unique opportunity for people to see and appreciate the glory of that spectacular region.

                    hiked it today ...

My wife and I decided to give Adams a try today ... and it was well worth the effort. Took us an hour and a half from the trail register to the tower. We were passed by a 'speed hiker' on our way up ... he spent maybe 15 min at the tower and left. A family of four (and dog) were also at the tower when we arrived. Surprisingly there was plenty of room for everyone to use the many levels/steps of the tower for some spectacular views. Today's passing clouds cast moving shadows on all of the peaks around us and that added to the panorama before us. We spent a leisurely hour on the tower soaking in the views.
MD ... I have to say something about your description of the trail ... "aside from a short rocky spot the entire hike is over nice soft ground on a wide trail" ... well, we'd have to say that there's more than one "short rocky spot", in fact there are several!! Granted, much of the trail is on nice soft ground, but there were some spots that reminded me of my climb up Seward several years ago! Many of the rocks were wet today, probably from the rains of the past couple of days no doubt. This is a steady climb from the moment you turn onto the trail at the two cairns (past the old cabins).
The trail crew has done a pretty good job with the trail ... and with fixing the tower (you can climb all the way up into the cabin of the tower). When climbing the tower use care because there isn't any wire netting up yet (it's on the ground at the base of the tower along with some more wood). Also the tower cabin is missing most of its windows and half of its roof.
There are now DEC foot trail markers along the trail along with some flagging ... not that you need any for summer hiking.
All in all, MD is right about getting 'bang for your buck' ... this mountain's tower offers some of the best vistas around for a relatively short hike.
