    St Regis Canoe Area 5/30-6/2

Put in on Lower st. regis tuesday morning and started our trip equipped with full packs and a couple we-no-nah kevlar canoes. 4 of us total in the group. We headed south down into spitfire and then continued into upper st. regis lake. WE then portaged into bog pond and after an attack of black flies made it to the far shore before a thunder storm hit. We waited it out and ate some lunch and then carried to bear pond. From there we paddled and then portaged into little long and then from there into green and then st. regis pond.
We set up camp on the northern shore. The black flies and mosquitos were pretty bad. After gettin a smoky fire going they calmed down a bit and later died out as it got cooler. Ate a nice dinner and sat around the fire and then layed out on the rocks and checked out the stars for awhile before turning in to the sound of loons calling.
In the morning after breakfast we headed west towards ochre pond. Seeing the water was high we decided to try to paddle the brook into ochre. Luckily we were able to and saved a good hour or 2. After ochre we had a long carry. a good 2 -2.5 miles. We tossed on our packs and then threw the canoes over our head and started hoofin it. We made it a little more than half way and took a break a the intersection with mud pond. We opted to carry around mud pond rather then paddle across it. The other 2 of us went down to check out mud pond.
WE made it to fish pond soon after and waited a good 25 min until the other 2 emerged from the carry from mud pond. They said the carry was bad and was about waist deep in mud. So I guess the name fit the pond. After a quick rainshower and thunder storm we made it to the northern side of fishpond and took lunch at a very nice lento next to a brook.
After the long lunch we headed out and carried into little fish pond then carried down into little long pond. After that paddle we portaged into kit fox pond followed by a carry into nellie pond. After the short paddle we carried to our camp site on bessie pond.
WE set up camp and then paddled out into the pond and relaxed on a big rock and watched as the little fish mingled about. It was nice because they actually cleaned you feet when you put them in the water! We also saw a pair of very strang looking fish. They were small and seemed to be either fighting or playing with one another. They sort of looked like Betta fish, the small extravagent looking fish in petstores in the tiny fish bowls. But they were bigger and girthier. They were a pale purple and green with long silky fins and tails. We tried to scoop them up with a hankercheif but they proved too fast for us. None of us has ever seen any fish like these, especially up in the ADKs. A ranger we talked to later in the trip said he caught a fish on the saranac that he says he has never seen before around here.
After dinner we sat around the fire and listen to barred owls hoot and the beavers play in the water, making incredibly large splashes, which sounded more like someone tossing a rock into the water but we were the only ones around. Must be some big beavers for such massive tail slaps.
In the morning we started our carry over to long pond. THe portage was muddy and in poor conditioned. Hard to maneuver over blowdown with a canoe over your head. It didn't help that the bugs were fearless and it started pouring. after losing my shoe twice in the mud we finally made it to a beaver pond we had to paddle across and then continue on down to long pond. We paddled down long pond and carried to floodwood.
In between the walk was was washed out and we had to paddle across to reach the trail. Tuned out if you paddle around through the beaver colony you can reach a new trail wich cuts out the rest of the portage and bring you to the st. regis canoe outfitters. We carried into flood wood and started paddling towards Rollins pond. The rain started up again and it poured on us pretty well for awhile. after paddling upstream though fast moving brook we made it to rollins pond and got a site at the campground, wich means we got showers wich was very nice. The rain stopped and we enjoyed piggin out on the rest of our food for the rest of the night around the fire. More barred owls and more loons calling put us to sleep. In the morning we were picked up and we loaded up the canoes and head back towards home. It was a very pleasant trip. Ill post a link as soon as I get my pictures uploaded into my album.
