    Hurricane 5/9/06

Took a nice hike up Hurricane today via the north trail from crow clearing. Got to the trail head around 10:30ish and hit the trail. It was overcast but still a very plesent day for a hike. Seeing it's suppsoed to rain the rest of the week I figured Id get at lest one hike in while i have a few days off. The trout lillies are all up and many of them were in bloom. Saw a few hobblebushes with some flowers out and a few Wake Robin Trilliums were in bloom as well. The trail was in excelent condition with very minimal blowdown. The lean too was very clean with no signs of litter, very nice to see. Lots of hairy woodpeckers were flying about form tree to tree. Came upon a winter wren on some upturned roots. I tried to get a picture but after following him from brush pile to brush pile I gave up deeming him the winner. Teh trail was faily dry with a few muddy spots but nothing serious. After taking my sweet time hiking up and stoping to admire either flora our fauna I reached summit around 12. A littel windy so i put on a fleece and enjoyed the views while eating some cheese and pepironi. Took a nic nap on the summit and was awoken by a raven croaking as he rode the thermals overhead. Packed up and headed down and foudn a few spots where it looked as if someon had built a small fire. Also found a campsite right off the side of the trail near the summit with a few bunt logs and balsam beds. Enjoyed the hike down and pondered the thought of taking the .7 mile jaunt out to Lost Pond but I coudl hear the saranac summer ale screaming my name so I decided to head back to crow clearing and head for home. Over all very enjoyable, peaceful, relaxing day with trails and summit to myself. Very nice and well deservied after all the work Ive been doing latley!

Hurricane was one of my favorites. Instead of being in the High Peaks I felt like I was in the audience looking at the show. And the show WAS the High Peaks

Hurricane is on my do-over list (was snowing that day). Had very brief glimpses of the good views. I'm thinking this would be a good beginner's hike and have a friend slated for something light to moderate to see if they like hiking mountains. Torn between something like Hurricane or Cascade...

I enjoy how theres a few lean-tos at the base of hurricane a mile or so in and then another one 1.1 miles out from that one. I think I'm gonan take my buddy out for an over ngiht there due to the nice mostly flat ground. He had surgery on his ACL a few months back and the dr said its cool for him to hike a few miles as long as it's nothign serious and it should help in the strengthing process. I also enjoy the birch forest ont eh hike up. Theres just somthing about a birch forest that captivates me, no matter how many times i've see them!

Big Slide and Algonquin have nice birch stretches around 3,000 feet.

Some of the nicest stands of birch I've seen are in the Catskills. Unfortunately, those mountains are too wimpy for some folks...

"Wimpy" is a strong term, because I'm sure the bushwacks are still tough near the top, or if you add 5 or 6 of the peaks into a single day...

I love teh catskills one of my firest backpackign trips was in them so they will always hold a special somthign for me. They are beautiful and its nice to have a change of scenery from teh adks every once and awhile! By the way Dick I was talking to a freind in Vhoorhesville and she said she saw 2 bear cubs cross the road in front of her on her way to altamont the other day. I'm figuring momma wasn't too far away. Seen any of these guys around?

We haven't, but some of our neighbors have had cub sightings within the last year or so. So far, it's raided bird feeders and the like. Many figured it wandered up from the Catskills. Yours is the first report I've heard about them down (up?) here this season. I'll pass the word around. Thanks.
