Headed out to bag wright algonquin and possibly iriquois this morning. We were stoped on the way down tot eh lodge by a guy whos car had stopped wrkin after sleeping in it for the night, he had some sort of air compressor heater in it. He awoke but his car did not and even with trying to jump it I had to tow him out and drive him down to the lodge to call tripple A.
After that we took off at about 8:50. It was pretty cold out and everything frooze on us after not too long. The wind on the trail was not too bad but they were 20+ on summits, as posted on the board in the loj. The traisl was not too bad considering yesterdays flood warinings. There was a noticible differnce from the trails from last weekend, more rocks nad roots exposed and a few mud pits. The cold had everything frozen so it wasnt too hard to cross the exposed mud. Used snow shoes the whole way unitll we reached the sign saying turn back if you dont have propper gear. There was a small waterfall type thing from the day befores thaw. here we switched to cramps ons and it was still a little hairy scary making our way up, lots of kicking and planting making sure we had sure footings. After that we kept the crampons on , the traisl was packed fairy well but there was evidence from people post hilong the day before not wearing snow shoes. As we climbed the views grew better, barley a cloud in the sky and the temperature reminded you of it.
We reached teh intersection where Wright s peak blue trail climbs .04 miles to the summit. We headed up wearing an extra layer, face protection, and goggles. ( kevin got me scard of snow blindness and the wind was kicking u p snow liek a mad man) We reached alpine and teh wind hit you like a ton of bricks. I woudl say the wind was well over 20mph and it was pushing us down onto the rocks. We carfully made our way to summit, very slow gogin due to the high winds. We stayed for maybe .5 seconda dn carefully made our way down off the rocks.
On my way down I felt a horribel pain in my left knee. It was buggin me at the end of out trip up phelps last week but nothing liek this. I even skied 5 miles on wed and felt no pain it what-so-ever. Any tiem any weight was put on it It hurt like the dickens. I was happy to get to trail where I could get out of the wind and take a few pictures and slide on my butt the majority of the way down.
Right before I hit the bottom of the trail I came to a sliding stop only to see a pine marten at teh bottom of the trail jumping aorund int eh snow. He looked up and saw me and hopped off into the woods, deff made the pain in my knee go away for a littel while.
We reached the junction and had some sandwhiches and decided against Lagonquin, If Wright was that windy then Algonquin had to have been horrible, and my knee was hurtin somthing fierce, but of course only when gogin downhill and that was waht was infront of the the majority of the way down. so we decided to headed back and took our sweet time doing so. Glisading at any chance I got.
Passed one person on his way up while we made our way down the slight waterfalla nd changed into snow shoes and had some hot chocolate (used a old thermos from the 60's or 70's and was amazed at how hot it kept teh liquid, this will deff be a regualr in my pack for the winter hikes from now on)
From there on we continued down, I resembled either Frankenstein or the Mummy as I snow shoed my way down kieeping my left leg stiff, as it cut down on the pain a considerable amount. Reached teh loj at 2:30 and had some more hot coco and drove home.
It was a very enjoable hiek even with turning back after Wright, but hey 1's better than none, and algonquin and iriquois aint goin no where! As for the hurt knee, after a few elixers at the homestead its feeling a littel better but am deff. gogin to be keeping an eye on it.
